Last night we had what I'd classify as our favorite pizza on the Cape right now - from Amari in Sandwich on 6A. I don't know what they do that makes it so special - but it is worth the trip; the pizza never fails to deliver. The first time we got Amari was when going off road on Sandy Neck - we brought a couple of pizzas with us for dinner on the beach - and the quality of the pizza was a lovely and delightful surprise. We had no idea what great pizza they produce. (Amari is also a full service restaurant and has wonderful food - highly recommended.) This pizza never feels greasy, the sauce is just right, really nice crust, excellent cheese (probably whole milk mozzarella). Always fresh topppings. One size only, 18 inch 'thin crust' Sicilian Style. And they have some unusual Specialty Pizzas (though we haven't tried them before), including some Mediterranean inspired with feta, and some nice vegetarian options. We LOVE this pizza. Rich says he has 'nothing but good things to say about Amari'. He did, however, state a desire to have more toppings (we ordered mushroom and onion last night and there were few mushrooms - though the ones on the pizza were delicious - a variety more flavorful that your typical 'pizza mushroom'). Rich also wishes the pizzas weren't so huge (though I'd disagree - the more the better from my perspective!) Rich's rating is 4.5 out of 5. It is worth going out of the way for.

Jack's Pizza
It seems fitting that Jack's Pizza on West Main in Hyannis would be our first entry on this blog. (We've talked about compiling a list of our pizza sampling experiences on Cape Cod for years, and since we're on vacation this week, it seemed like perfect timing.) We've been coming to Jack's for as long as I can remember; it definitely ranks in my personal top five best pizza places of all time. Usually I go with plain - toppings are good here but there's something special about Jack's plain old cheese pizza that is just fantastic. (Side note: they tend to put toppings under the cheese, which is fine, but often times if you place a large order and have cheese as well as pepperoni, it is hard to tell which is which. Rich also thinks that 'something special happens to the Pepperoni' when you put it on top - crispiness related, I think, which the Jack's pizza doesn't have - though perhaps the crispy crust makes up for it?!) One of the best things about Jack's is the crust; it is very crispy and exceptionally tasty. Very good stuff.
Tonight we brought the kids (despite the fact that it is a bar,as well as pizza place, we've always felt comfortable bringing the kids here and definitely would rate it as family friendly) and had a small cheese and a large mushroom and onion for dinner. Jack's ALWAYS has fresh veggies, which is key for me. There is nothing I hate more on a pizza than canned mushrooms.
I loved our pizza, as usual, but we sense they've perhaps changed the sauce recipe? Perhaps too sweet? It will not keep me from returning , in any case. LOVE this pizza. The stuffed quahogs are also good, and I enjoy the garden salad, and the calzones (the veggie calzone is really terrific - pea pods are a nice touch). The "Pizza of the Day" is also a nice option (check the specials board). Rich is a fan of the Mexican pizza, too.
A note on ambiance: Jack's definitely has a 'dive' bar feel, which isn't for everyone (but it is for us!). Busy and lively local bar scene, vinyl booths and plastic faux wood table tops, pinball, Golden Tee, Ms. Pac Man, etc. We happen to enjoy this a great deal - old school Cape location, NOT a chain, good times. Full bar, too. Highly recommended.

As an addendum: some comments from Rich regarding his thoughts about our dining experience at Jack's tonight; keep in mind, Rich rates his pizza on a five-star scale (5 being the best, 0 the worst). -- he thinks that "something has happened to Jack's pizza". A year ago Rich would have called Jack's "one of the best, if not THE best, pizza on Cape Cod. Previously, he ranked Jack's as a 'solid 4.5'. Now he ranks Jack's as a 3. When I asked him why, he says that the fresh toppings, cheese and crust are all of high quality, but he's noticed a difference in the sauce based on our last two visits...we'll certainly report back on the next visit. I am keeping my high recommendation of Jack's Pizza, in any case, and hope that the sauce won't disappoint on the next visit.
